I am thinking about having a Breast Augmentation. I keep reading so much information on saline and silicone implants – which one is better?

We can’t really say that one is better than the other. Both implants can be placed under or over the muscle, both implants have similar shape, both implants have a warranty. However, what we can say is that the Saline implants are filled with normal saline. If there is a rupture the saline is absorbed into the body and a deflation occurs. Saline implants are slightly more prone to wrinkling and rippling so depending on your frame, the surgeons may consider silicone over the saline. Silicone implants got approved by the FDA to be used again for cosmetic reasons in 2006. It was a well received decision by the ASAPS and ASPS. The FDA did put a stipulation that a woman must be the age of 21 to be able to have silicone implants. If there was a rupture of a silicone implant, an additional surgery would be needed to remove the silicone gel within the chest.

The surgeons do recommend that all patients purchase extended warranty on their implants whether they are saline or silicone. That is done directly through the company by the patient – usually online at www.mentor.com or www.allergan.com.

Where are surgeries performed?

The surgeons have privileges at many hospitals and surgical centers throughout the city. Minor procedures can be done with local anesthesia in our office treatment room.
