Breast Reconstruction Techniques
Breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast mound after partial or total removal of breast tissue. It can be performed immediately during the mastectomy or at a later date, depending on the patient’s medical situation and preferences.
Dr. Prescott offers two primary approaches:
- Implant-based reconstruction uses tissue expanders or implants to recreate the breast’s shape. It is more common due to its shorter surgery time.
- Flap reconstruction utilizes the patient’s own skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from a donor site. This strategy offers a natural tissue alternative at the cost of a longer procedure and an additional surgical site.
Good Candidates for Breast Reconstruction in Louisville, KY
Ideal candidates are women who have undergone or are planning a mastectomy, are in good overall health, are non-smokers or willing to quit before surgery, and have realistic expectations about the multi-stage nature of the process. Patients with active infections or who are not yet medically stable after cancer therapy may need to delay reconstruction until their health is optimized.
The Procedure
Reconstruction begins with general anesthesia. When performed alongside the mastectomy, Dr. Prescott works in coordination with the oncologic surgical team.
For implant-based cases, she places an expander or implant beneath the chest muscle or skin, secured with surgical mesh. For flap cases, donor tissue is harvested and repositioned to form the breast mound. Once shaping is complete, incisions are closed in layers with sutures, and drains are placed.
Radiation and Reconstruction
Radiation therapy can cause skin contraction and stiffness that may affect reconstructive outcomes. Dr. Prescott monitors patients during radiation to support tissue healing. Some patients who receive radiation will require a second procedure involving a fat graft to introduce soft, non-irradiated tissue to the area and improve the final result.
Nipple Preservation
Nipple removal may be necessary for oncologic reasons (when the tumor is too close to the nipple) or aesthetic ones (when the nipple position would create a disproportionate result). When the nipple cannot be preserved, patients may choose surgical nipple reconstruction or a three-dimensional tattoo performed by a skilled artist. Dr. Prescott discusses all options in detail during the consultation.
The Recovery Process
Dr. Prescott provides full post-operative instructions covering drain care, dressing changes, and activity restrictions. A soft, front-closure cotton bra is recommended to accommodate initial swelling. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks, and all follow-up appointments should be kept — particularly during tissue expansion. Most patients undergo at least two surgeries: the first to establish shape, the second for refinement through skin reshaping or fat grafting.

How Much Does Breast Reconstruction Cost in Kentucky?
The cost of breast reconstruction depends on the surgical approach chosen, the number of procedures required, whether adjunct treatments like fat grafting are needed, and anesthesia and facility fees. The overall price is highly individualized; Dr. Prescott will provide a personalized estimate during your consultation based on your specific treatment plan.
Insurance Coverage
Breast reconstruction is protected by the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), a federal law signed in 1998 that requires most group health insurance plans covering mastectomies to also cover reconstruction. Coverage includes reconstruction of the treated breast, surgery on the opposite breast for symmetry, external prostheses, and treatment of all mastectomy-related complications, including lymphedema. Dr. Prescott’s team is committed to helping patients understand and exercise their rights under this law.
