Q: How long have you been a cosmetic surgeon?
A: 17 years

Q: Where did you attend medical school and residency?
A: University of Louisville for Med school and General Surgery Residency, Indiana University for Plastic Surgery

Q: What are your areas of expertise?
A: Breast and Body

Q: Advice for clients thinking of cosmetic surgery?
A: Work hard to get in as good of shape as possible prior to body contouring. That will allow me to do an even better job for you when it comes time for surgery.

Q: What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
A: Liposuction removes stubborn fatty deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Typically done through tiny ‘band-aid’ incisions. Success depends on good overlying skin tone. A tummy tuck may include some liposuction as part of the contouring process, but definitely includes removal of excess skin that may have been damaged from excessive stretching such as prior pregnancies.

Q: Who is a good candidate for tummy tuck vs. liposuction?
A: Liposuction is best done when there are stubborn deposits of fat that haven’t improved with diet and exercise. The skin quality needs to be good so that the skin can snap back into the new shape. A tummy tuck is best reserved for those patients whose skin does not have as good of elasticity and should be actually removed for the best contours.

Q: When should someone consider surgery following weight loss?
A: During active weight loss, the body is breaking down both fat and proteins. We want to get rid of fat and that is good, but we need proteins to help heal. So the best time for surgery following weight loss is once the actual weight goal has been reached (or exceeded) and the weight has stabilized. Then the body will have the proteins to help the healing process.

Q: What to expect following any cosmetic surgery?
A: Don’t be fooled by the popular TV shows. These shows condense the healing timeline and make it seem like the changes occur over a few days. The healing process plays out over a timeline of weeks to months. So although you will look so much better almost right away, the secret is that it there are continual improvements happening over a much longer time.
